New Delhi, Sept. 14 -- A gym trainer was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in south Delhi's Aya Nagar on Monday morning, with police suspecting personal enmity as the motive.
The police were alerted through a PCR call received at Fatehpur Beri police station. The deceased, Vijay Kumar, was inside a gym when some men called him outside. The assailants then opened fire near Hansa Chowk in the Fatehpur Beri area around 10 am, police and his family said. Around 15 rounds were reportedly fired.
Vijay suffered multiple gunshot injuries, including to his head, and later succumbed to his injuries. The assailants fled the spot after the shooting.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal said the motive initially appeared to be personal enmity. Police are also probing a possible link with a longstanding rivalry between families or groups in Aya Nagar.
Vijay's uncle Devendra said the assailants appeared to know that he was inside the gym and called him outside, possibly to avoid CCTV cameras installed in the area.
Devendra said Vijay was a gym trainer whose parents had died. He is survived by his sister, wife and two children.
Police have registered an FIR and formed multiple teams to identify and apprehend the accused. Raids have been conducted at several locations.
The police are also probing whether the shooting is linked to the murder of 55-year-old dairy businessman Ratan Lohia earlier this year.
Lohia was allegedly killed in a planned attack in which more than 60 rounds were fired. His family had alleged that the murder was linked to an earlier killing in the area, but police have not found any connection between Lohia's murder and Monday's shooting.
Senior police officers reached the spot after the incident, while security personnel were deployed to prevent any further escalation.
