Kolkata, Sept. 20 -- A block-level leader of Humayun Kabir-led Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) was arrested for allegedly making provocative remarks against police at a party meeting in May, taking the number of arrests in the case to four, an official said on Sunday.
Nasim Sheikh was arrested from Miangram in Rejinagar on Saturday night. The case relates to an AJUP workers' meeting at Shaktipur on May 7, where several party leaders, including Kabir, allegedly made objectionable remarks against police, following which a case was registered.
Police said Sheikh's involvement emerged during the investigation and that the probe was at an early stage. Kabir, however, claimed Sheikh had been framed.
The Rejinagar bypoll, necessitated by Kabir's resignation from the seat to retain Nawda, is scheduled for October 6. AJUP has fielded his son, Golam Nabi Azad.
Meanwhile, Independent candidate Saiful Islam was arrested in a 2021 election clash case. AJUP state secretary Ashik Iqbal was also arrested with alleged fake currency and illegal arms. WITH AGENCY INPUTS
