New Delhi, Sept. 8 -- The All India Students' Federation (AISF) on Tuesday organised a march in Delhi University's North Campus, demanding compensation for students affected by the Satya Niketan building collapse and adequate hostel facilities for all DU students.
More than 30 students participated in the march, which began at the Arts Faculty and proceeded towards the office of the Vice-Chancellor. AISF General Secretary Dinesh Sreerangaraj and national president Viraaj Devang also took part in the demonstration. A memorandum listing the students' demands was submitted to the Vice-Chancellor's office. Addressing the gathering, AISF leader Aniket Madke raised concerns over the shortage of affordable and safe accommodation for students in the university. He said the lack of hostel facilities was forcing several students to depend on private paying guest (PG) accommodations, which, according to the organisation, were often expensive and lacked adequate safety standards.
The organisation alleged that although space had been sanctioned for hostel construction at the university, funds had not been adequately allocated for several projects. It also pointed to colleges where hostel construction has remained incomplete for years despite the expenditure of substantial amounts of money.
