Kolkata, Oct. 15 -- Ahead of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections, two former Trinamool Congress councillors, Farzana Chowdhury and Sanchita Mondal, joined the Congress on Wednesday, triggering political discussions in the city.
The joining ceremony was held at the Middle Kolkata District Congress office at Haji Mohammad Mohsin Square, where state Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar handed them the party flags.
Farzana Chowdhury was elected from the erstwhile Ward 64 of the KMC, while Sanchita Mondal was a former councillor from Ward 51. Farzana, who was previously associated with the CPI, had joined the TMC before moving to the Congress. Mondal's entry into the Congress has also drawn attention ahead of the civic polls, expected after the festive season.
Sarkar said leaders and workers from different political parties were joining the Congress, expressing faith in Rahul Gandhi's "relentless and uncompromising struggle" against what he described as the authoritarianism of the RSS and BJP. He said the Congress was fighting to protect the country's tradition of pluralism.
Sarkar also announced that the Congress would launch a movement after Durga Puja, demanding the restoration of voting rights for people whose names were deleted from electoral rolls.
