India, July 15 -- The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Tuesday urged the West Bengal government to hold student union elections in colleges and universities, saying elected student bodies were essential for nurturing campus leadership. The organisation said it would seek a meeting with the state government to press its education-related demands, including the restoration of campus polls. The demand was raised by ABVP national general secretary Birendra Singh Solanki while addressing a student convention on College Street after the organisation's "Chhatra Shakti Maha Michhil", organised to mark its 78th foundation day and the 150th anniversary of the composition of Vande Mataram. "ABVP is in favour of student union elections across the country. We want them to be held in Bengal so that leadership can emerge from classrooms and campuses and contribute to society," Solanki said. Welcoming the implementation of the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, Solanki said the law would help curb violence and remove anti-social elements from campuses, creating a safer and more conducive academic environment for students.
