New Delhi, Aug. 25 -- The body of 15-year-old Mithun, who fell into an open drain in southeast Delhi's Jasola village while trying to retrieve a kite, was recovered Tuesday afternoon, more than 72 hours after he went missing, officials said.
Mithun, a Class 8 student, disappeared around 11 am Saturday. His body was recovered around 1.15 pm Tuesday after a multi-agency search involving the Delhi Fire Service, NDRF, rescue teams and divers.
Heavy machines were used to remove accumulated silt and garbage.
His father, Avdhesh, a daily-wage labourer, had earlier entered the drain himself after rescue efforts failed to locate his son.
The family questioned the response to the incident and alleged that locals were prevented from joining the search.
After the recovery, Mithun's family appealed to the Delhi government to construct a boundary wall around the drain and demanded compensation and a permanent solution.
His aunt Anita said several migrant labourer families living nearby faced similar risks.
The MCD had earlier suspended a junior engineer for alleged dereliction of duty and initiated disciplinary proceedings. Mithun's body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
