New Delhi, Sept. 5 -- Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has expressed strong concern over the alleged assault of protesters by police personnel during recent student demonstrations.
Speaking at the launch of a book by retired IPS officer Yashovardhan Azad on Friday, Justice Bhuyan said it was deeply distressing to see young Indian Police Service officers personally involved in assaulting protesters and demonstrators. He said the sense of detachment and impartiality expected from police officers appeared to be declining, calling the situation a matter of serious concern.
Justice Bhuyan emphasised that police personnel are expected to maintain professionalism and remain detached while dealing with protests and demonstrations. His remarks came amid controversy surrounding police action during the student-led protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The protests had witnessed clashes between demonstrators and police, with allegations of excessive force and mistreatment of protesters. The Supreme Court has also been examining issues arising from the violence and police action connected to the demonstrations.
Justice Bhuyan's comments highlighted concerns over the conduct of law enforcement personnel and the need for police officers to maintain neutrality and restraint while handling public protests.
