Varanasi, Oct. 19 -- A selfie stop on a highway overbridge proved fatal on Monday morning when a speeding truck rammed into a parked SUV, killing four people and seriously injuring four others in Varanasi's Mirzamurad area.
The accident occurred around 6 am on the Rupapur overbridge when the eight occupants of a Scorpio SUV, returning to Varanasi after offering prayers at Vindhyachal, stopped and stepped out to take selfies. A truck coming from the Prayagraj side crashed into the SUV from behind, mangling the vehicle.
Four people died on the spot, while the other four sustained serious injuries. One of the injured was reported to be in critical condition.
Hearing the crash, local residents rushed to the spot and alerted the police. A Mirzamurad police team, assisted by locals, rescued the victims from the wreckage. The injured were taken by ambulance to a trauma centre.
Police sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. Three deceased and three injured persons were identified, while efforts continued to establish the identities of the remaining victims.
The truck was seized, and police launched an investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
