Siliguri, Oct. 8 -- The Super Speciality Block at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) is expected to become fully operational by June 2027, Minister of State for Transport and Rogi Kalyan Samiti member Anandamay Barman said on Thursday.
Speaking after a meeting of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti at the hospital, Barman said that although Outpatient department (OPD) of some departments are currently functioning from the block, the facility is yet to become fully operational due to various reasons.
According to the minister, work on the Super Speciality Block had progressed slowly for a long period during the previous government. He said: "Efforts are underway to expedite the remaining work. Machinery worth around Rs 50 crore is expected to arrive from the United States, following which the equipment will be installed and the facility made operational."
Barman also alleged that around Rs 2 crore of government funds had been wasted due to the prolonged delay in the project.
"An inquiry on the loss will be done," the MoS added. Once fully operational, the Super Speciality Block is expected to provide advanced treatment facilities to a large number of patients from North Bengal and neighbouring areas. During the visit, Barman also inaugurated the operation theatre of the hospital's Obstetrics and Gynaecology department.
All the works are also expected to be completed by next year. Hospital Superintendent Dr Kaushik Ishor, Principal Dr Sujoy Mistry and other hospital officials and staff were present at the meeting.
