New Delhi, Sept. 28 -- A 44-year-old "habitual cheat" was arrested for allegedly duping a Dwarka-based businessman of Rs 1.69 lakh by posing as the spouse of a prominent politician, police said on Monday.
The accused, Bhalinder Pal Singh, allegedly told the businessman that a student's fee had to be paid urgently as the person responsible was on leave, promising reimbursement through the office. Believing the claim, the businessman transferred the money to different bank accounts and also booked a Delhi-Lucknow flight ticket.
Police said Singh used the Ashoka emblem as his messaging app profile picture to create an impression of official authority. He allegedly used fake identities in earlier cheating cases, posing as a mayor, an MLA's personal assistant and an MP's relative.
An FIR was registered at Dwarka South Police Station on September 13. Police traced Singh through the IP address used to create the messaging account and arrested him from Gurugram's Sector 43, where he allegedly lived as Jasraj Sehgal. Two Aadhaar cards bearing the same number were recovered. Singh has been involved in 25 cases and declared a proclaimed offender in four.
