New Delhi, Sept. 14 -- Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday said the city will get 2,000 modern public toilets within a year, with the Tourism Department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) set to construct 1,000 each. Gupta made the announcement while inaugurating a modern public convenience complex at Labour Chowk in Singalpur village, Shalimar Bagh. She said the entire cost of the 1,000 toilets to be constructed by the MCD would be funded through the Chief Minister's Development Fund.
"The Delhi government is committed to providing better and modern public amenities to residents," Gupta said.
The Chief Minister said the Singalpur toilet block was completed in around three months despite rain and strong winds. The Tourism Department will construct 500 toilets in the next six months and another 500 in the subsequent six months.
She also said the government was focusing on basic infrastructure in slum clusters, including toilets, water supply, sewer lines, new pipelines and electricity connections. "Better coordination between the Delhi government and the MCD is essential for the timely development of such facilities," she said.
Gupta announced that a grand 'Unity Mall' would be developed at the site of the old Delhi Haat in Pitampura. The facility will have emporiums representing states across the country and food outlets serving regional cuisines.
The CM also said entry points to Delhi were being beautified with new gateways to improve the city's image.
On construction workers, Gupta said fresh registration was being undertaken so they could access government schemes. Special mobile vans would visit construction sites and workplaces to provide health check-ups.
She also inspected development works related to the Munak Canal and said departments and the MCD were working in coordination to accelerate development projects across the city.
