India, Aug. 7 -- Breastfeeding provides newborns with essential nutrition and strengthens their immunity, said Dr. Sundeep Kaushik, Medical Superintendent, NDMC Palika Maternity Hospital, during an awareness programme organised to mark World Breastfeeding Week. The week, observed from August 1 to 7, saw the hospital conduct counselling sessions and interactive programmes for expectant and new mothers, focusing on the importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and exclusively breastfeeding infants for the first six months. "Breastfeeding is a baby's first vaccine and the most natural gift a mother can give her child," Dr. Kaushik said. He highlighted its role in providing complete nutrition, supporting brain development, strengthening immunity and fostering a bond between the mother and child. One-to-one counselling was also provided to mothers experiencing difficulties in breastfeeding. The hospital also encouraged mothers to continue breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary foods until the child is two years old or beyond, in line with established recommendations. Dr. Kaushik said breastfeeding also aids mothers' recovery after childbirth and can help lower the risk of certain long-term health conditions. He stressed the need for breastfeeding-friendly homes, healthcare facilities and workplaces to ensure mothers receive adequate support. The initiative witnessed participation from expectant and new mothers and was aimed at strengthening awareness and support for breastfeeding as part of maternal and child healthcare.
