New Delhi, Sept. 7 -- Political storm over the building collapse in the national capital that killed seven people raged on Monday. Opposition parties led by the Congress targeted the BJP and accused the ruling party of evading accountability and terming its government in Delhi as a "killing machine".

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi starts using insulting labels like "dimagi Naxal" and "naraaz phoopha" against those asking questions from the government.

The leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha accused the BJP government of evading accountability for the collapse and asked what excuse was there for this helplessness when Delhi has a "triple-engine" government.

A war of words erupted between the AAP and the BJP over the tragedy that took place on Sunday in the Satya Niketan area near Delhi University's South Campus.

The AAP, the main Opposition party in Delhi, accused the BJP of not focusing on victims. The BJP hit back saying the previous government had different priorities.

The BJP also accused the AAP of spending lavishly on former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's official bungalow, alleging that no one has forgotten its love for "Sheeshmahal".

"When a building collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan, BJP, under Amit Shah, was busy inaugurating another office in Goa. BJP's priorities are its offices, not hostels for students," the AAP said on X.

BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari hit back, claiming that Shah had cancelled all his scheduled meetings and was personally monitoring the situation, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was at the spot monitoring relief and rescue operations.

The Congress alleged the scrapping of Section 466(A) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act provided protection from criminal action against builders involved in illegal and dangerous construction.

CPI-M general secretary M A Baby said those responsible for this tragedy must be identified and brought to justice, and immediate measures must be taken to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose too attacked the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Delhi, alleging a "total collapse" of everyday governance in the national capital.

"No city exemplifies the total collapse of everyday governance more starkly than New Delhi -- ruled by the BJP's 'triple engine' -- the MCD, state and Centre," Ghose, a Rajya Sabha MP, said on X.

CPI national secretary and MP P Sandosh Kumar said this tragedy "exposes the devastating consequences of the continued neglect of education, unsafe infrastructure and a corrupt nexus that puts profits before human lives".
