Kuala Lampur, July 31 -- Malaysia's democratic journey is marked by elections, but it is defined by what happens after them.
On August 1, voters in Negeri Sembilan will make their choice. Political parties will celebrate victories or reflect upon defeats. Supporters will rejoice, while others will inevitably feel disappointed. Such emotions are natural in every democracy.
Yet one date should never eclipse another.
August 31 remains the greater national milestone.
No matter who wins on August 1, all Malaysians will still stand together beneath one Jalur Gemilang less than a month later. Our Independence Day reminds us that political competition is temporary, while nationhood is permanent.
This distinction matters greatly.
