Germany says 'auf wiedersehen' to transit visas for Indians
India, June 6 -- Indians will no longer require transit visas for layovers at any German airport while travelling to another country. Post the publication of the announcement in Germany's Federal Law Gazette (also known as the Bundesgesetzblatt or BGBI) on June 2, 2026, the exemption will come into effect from June 3 onwards.
According to a post on X by Randhir Jaiswal, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India, the idea was discussed between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the latter's visit to India in January 2026.
