New Delhi, Aug. 25 -- India is planning to launch a dedicated satellite or acquire a transponder to improve maritime governance and strengthen port operations, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on August 25, 2025.

The initiative aims to provide exclusive coverage across coastal regions, inland waterways, and ports.

The proposed satellite system would integrate with national maritime databases, enabling real-time monitoring of vessel traffic, enhancing navigational safety, and streamlining port management.

Officials believe the move will allow early detection of congestion and support efficient vessel traffic management, making maritime operations more reliable and secure.
