Afghanistan, June 25 -- The White House has asked Congress to approve more than $1.4 billion in emergency funding to strengthen efforts against a growing Ebola outbreak in Central Africa and prevent the virus from spreading beyond the region.

According to a proposal submitted to lawmakers on Wednesday, the funding package would support international containment measures, strengthen disease surveillance and help protect the United States from potential cross-border transmission.

The largest portion of the request, about $800 million, would be used to establish a quarantine and response center in Kenya, expand treatment capacity, provide medical supplies, trace contacts of infected individuals and improve infection-control systems. Another ...
