Afghanistan, Aug. 19 -- WFP warns millions in Afghanistan risk hunger this winter as drought, reduced aid, and mass returns worsen the crisis, with urgent funding needs far unmet.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that millions of Afghans are at risk of serious food shortages this winter, as funding shortfalls prevent it from assisting all those in need.

John Ayliffe, WFP's director in Afghanistan, said the crisis is being driven by three main factors: ongoing drought, a sharp drop in international aid, and the forced return of hundreds of thousands of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries. He stressed that more than 15 million Afghans now urgently require food assistance.
