Afghanistan, June 27 -- World Food Programme (WFP) says the closure of major border crossings with Pakistan and the growing reliance on trade through Iran have sharply increased food prices and deepened Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis.
In a report released on Friday, the WFP said around 60% of Afghanistan's trade now passes through Iran after disruptions to commercial routes with Pakistan in late 2025. The agency warned that longer and more expensive transport routes are driving up the cost of food, fuel and agricultural supplies.
The report estimates that 13.8 million people in Afghanistan are facing crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity. If trade disruptions continue, another 2.3 million people could fall into acute hunger ove...
