Afghanistan, Feb. 18 -- The United States released new intelligence details alleging China conducted a covert nuclear test, intensifying scrutiny amid growing global security tensions today.
A senior US official said seismic data indicates China may have conducted an underground nuclear explosion at its western testing region.
Christopher Yau, a senior State Department official, said monitoring stations recorded a 2.75 magnitude event consistent with an underground explosive test.
He added the signal did not match mining explosions or natural earthquakes and showed characteristics typical of a nuclear detonation.
