Afghanistan, June 10 -- The U.S. military has launched what it described as "defensive" strikes against Iran following the crash of an American military helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement issued by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

CENTCOM said late Tuesday that the operation was carried out in response to the helicopter incident, but did not provide details on the targets or the scale of the strikes.

Iran's Mehr News Agency reported that residents and local sources heard several explosions in and around the southern port city of Sirik on Tuesday evening. Iranian authorities have not yet released details on possible casualties or damage.
