Afghanistan, May 17 -- The United Nations said nearly three billion people worldwide are affected by housing shortages or inadequate living conditions, warning that the global housing crisis has become one of the most urgent urban challenges.

In a report released on Saturday ahead of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), the UN said more than 1.1 billion people currently live in informal settlements while over 300 million people are homeless worldwide.

The organization warned that worsening climate risks, rapid urbanization and widening inequality are intensifying pressure on cities and increasing the need for urgent and sustainable housing solutions.
