Afghanistan, Sept. 27 -- UN sanctions on Iran will resume Saturday after the Security Council rejected a Russian-Chinese proposal to delay, prompting Tehran to warn of severe diplomatic consequences.

UN sanctions on Iran will be reimposed on Saturday after the UN Security Council voted down a Russian-Chinese proposal to postpone their return, Reuters reported on September 27.

Only four of the council's 15 members backed the resolution, while the majority rejected it, paving the way for sanctions to come back into force.

Tehran swiftly condemned the move. Iranian officials warned that Western governments would bear responsibility for the consequences of reinstating sanctions, which they argue undermine diplomacy.
