Afghanistan, June 26 -- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the federal government may prevent asylum seekers from entering the country at official border crossings, handing the Trump administration a major legal victory that could sharply restrict access to asylum protections.

In a 6-3 decision, the court held that migrants stopped before physically entering the United States have not legally "arrived in" the country and therefore are not entitled to invoke statutory asylum protections, NPR reported on Thursday. The ruling gives the administration broader authority to turn away asylum seekers before they set foot on U.S. soil.
