Afghanistan, July 8 -- The U.S. military said on Tuesday it carried out strikes on more than 80 targets across Iran, saying the operation was launched in response to reported Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes targeted Iranian air defence systems, command-and-control facilities, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile sites and more than 60 fast attack boats operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

CENTCOM said the operation was intended to reduce Iran's ability to threaten international shipping and safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest energy transit routes.
