Afghanistan, May 9 -- At least two people were killed and several others wounded after clashes broke out between local residents and Taliban forces in Afghanistan's northeastern Badakhshan province, according to local sources and officials.
The violence erupted in the village of Atn Jalo in Argo district during an operation to destroy poppy fields.
Local sources said protests began on Friday after tensions escalated between residents and Taliban anti-narcotics forces. Witnesses said Taliban fighters opened fire on protesters, killing a young man and wounding several others.
Sources said another man, identified as Abdul Rahim, was killed on Saturday when clashes and protests resumed in the area.
