Afghanistan, Aug. 16 -- Trump claimed Russia lost India as an oil client after U.S. tariff hikes, though New Delhi has not confirmed halting Russian crude imports amid growing trade tensions.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Russia has "lost India" as a key oil client after Washington imposed steep penalties on New Delhi over its crude purchases. He also hinted he may refrain from imposing additional secondary tariffs on countries still buying Russian oil, but did not rule it out.

Trump's remarks came as New Delhi has not officially confirmed any halt in Russian oil imports. The statement followed Washington's announcement of a 25 percent duty, later doubled to 50 percent, on Indian goods, set to take effect on August 27.
