Afghanistan, June 30 -- A 17-year-old Thai girl was allegedly killed by an Australian tourist after meeting him in the resort city of Pattaya, police said, in a case that has shocked Thailand and renewed concerns about the safety of young women in the country's tourism hubs.

Thai police said the teenager met 55-year-old Australian national Simon Peter Carmen on a Pattaya beach on Wednesday night before accompanying him to his apartment. Investigators allege that he strangled the girl during the early hours of Thursday following an argument.
