Afghanistan, May 10 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that the war in Ukraine was "moving toward an end" and sharply criticized Western support for Kyiv during Russia's annual Victory Day commemorations in Moscow.

Speaking after a scaled-down military parade in Red Square, Putin described Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine as "heroes" confronting what he called an aggressive force fully backed by NATO countries. He said Russia's military objectives in Ukraine remained "justified."

Putin compared Russia's current campaign in Ukraine with the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany during World War Two, saying the historic victory continued to inspire Russian forces on the battlefield.
