Afghanistan, May 17 -- Pakistani authorities said on Saturday that at least five armed militants were killed after insurgents attacked a police checkpoint in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and exchanged fire with security forces.

Local police officials said several senior commanders and important members of the armed group were among those killed during the operation in the northwestern district near the Afghanistan border.

According to police statements, the militants killed in the clash had allegedly been involved in previous attacks against Pakistani security personnel and civilians in the region.
