Afghanistan, June 11 -- The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has warned that more than four million Afghan refugees in Iran are facing growing economic hardship as conflict in the region and funding shortages worsen their living conditions.
In a statement on Thursday, NRC Secretary General Jan Egeland said many Afghan refugee families are struggling to cover basic expenses, including rent, food and medical care.
Egeland said he recently met Afghan families on the outskirts of Tehran, including a household headed by a disabled former button-maker whose family relies on NRC cash assistance to avoid homelessness.
