Afghanistan, July 28 -- At least 137 people, including 25 women, were publicly flogged across Afghanistan between April 1 and June 30, the United Nations said on Tuesday, warning that corporal punishment and other human rights violations continue despite growing international criticism.
In its latest quarterly human rights report, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said Taliban courts ordered at least 137 public floggings during the three-month period. Those punished included 112 men and 25 women convicted of offences such as breaking the Ramadan fast, extramarital relations and other acts prosecuted under the Taliban's interpretation of Islamic law.
