A new COVID-19 variant, "Stratos," is spreading at a "moderate" level across the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Global data shows its prevalence rose from 7.4 percent in early May to 22.7 percent by the end of the month in 38 countries.
First detected in Southeast Asia in January, Stratos initially drew little attention in the West. In the U.S., it made up less than 1 percent of cases in May, but by late June, it accounted for 14 percent, reflecting a sharp upward trend.
