Afghanistan, July 2 -- A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan late Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The USGS said the earthquake occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The epicenter was located about 50 kilometers southwest of Jurm district in Afghanistan's northeastern Badakhshan province.

Authorities had not released information on casualties or property damage as of Thursday morning. Emergency officials were continuing to assess the situation, and communications from remote mountainous areas remained limited.
