Afghanistan, Aug. 19 -- A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Afghanistan's northeastern province of Badakhshan early Wednesday, with tremors felt in parts of the country, including Kabul, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake was centred about 35 kilometres southwest of Jorm district at a depth of roughly 195 kilometres, according to the information provided in the initial report. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
