Afghanistan, Feb. 11 -- Former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai stresses women's access to education remains essential for national development as restrictions continue limiting girls' learning opportunities nationwide.

Former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai said societal progress and development depend on women and girls playing an active role, which requires full access to education and science.

In a message marking International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Wednesday, Karzai praised Afghan women's contributions to social life and national development.

Girls in Afghanistan have been barred from attending secondary schools for more than 1,600 days, leaving millions without access to formal education across the country.
