Afghanistan, July 27 -- Iran is continuing to exchange messages with the United States but says conditions are not currently in place to resume formal negotiations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday, as military tensions between the two countries remain high.
Baghaei said Tehran's immediate priority was defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity and people rather than entering negotiations. He accused Washington of undermining diplomacy through military action and said the United States had destroyed the conditions needed for a return to talks.
