Afghanistan, Sept. 22 -- Rights group Hengaw reported Iran executed over 1,000 prisoners in 2025, including 65 Afghans, with executions surging 40 percent since the Israel-Iran conflict began.

The human rights group Hengaw reported that Iran has executed at least 1,002 prisoners since January 2025, including 65 Afghan nationals and dozens of ethnic minorities.

In a statement released Sunday, September 21, Hengaw said those executed included 29 women, one child, and at least 33 political or religious prisoners.

The group noted that 404 executions were carried out after the outbreak of the Israel-Iran conflict, a 40 percent rise compared to earlier months, and the highest figure in two decades.
