Afghanistan, June 28 -- Iran were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite completing the group stage unbeaten after results elsewhere denied them a place among the tournament's best third-placed teams.

Amir Ghalenoei's side finished with three draws against Egypt, Belgium and New Zealand. Iran had hoped to qualify for the round of 32 through the best third-placed ranking, but a dramatic 3-3 draw between Austria and Algeria in another group ended those hopes.

Iran's campaign was also shaped by missed opportunities. A late goal against Egypt was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, while striker Mehdi Taremi missed a penalty that could have secured a crucial victory.
