Afghanistan, March 13 -- An umbrella group of Iran-backed militias in Iraq has claimed responsibility for downing a US military aircraft in western Iraq, according to reports on Friday. The group said the attack was carried out in response to what it described as violations of Iraqi sovereignty.
The group, known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, said it shot down a US KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft. In a statement, the group claimed the action was taken to defend Iraq's airspace and territorial sovereignty.
