Afghanistan, June 25 -- A 54-year-old French woman and her five children have been rescued from what Pakistani authorities described as years of domestic confinement and abuse in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said. The woman's husband has been arrested and faces criminal charges as an investigation into the case continues.

According to police, the woman, identified in local media reports as Sylvie Yasmina, submitted a written complaint alleging that her husband subjected her and their children to repeated physical and psychological abuse after moving the family from Australia to Pakistan in 2014.
