France Says It Will Not Compromise on Afghan Women's Rights

Afghanistan, Sept. 22 -- France's Special Envoy for Human Rights, Isabelle Rome, said the rights of Afghan women and girls must remain at the center of the international agenda five years after the Taliban returned to power, warning that systematic restrictions imposed by the group cannot become normalized.

Speaking at a high-level event on Afghanistan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Rome said France "will never compromise" on the rights of Afghan women and girls and condemned what she described as the Taliban's systematic violations of their fundamental freedoms. She said Paris remains committed to ensuring women's rights are explicitly reflected in UN resolutions on Afghanistan.
