Afghanistan, July 21 -- The first Chinese transit train to use Iran's railway network has delivered a shipment to Herat in western Afghanistan, Iranian media reported on Tuesday.
The train carried 500 tonnes of cargo, including fibreboard sheets, and reached Herat after the goods were unloaded and reloaded before continuing through Iran's railway network, according to the reports.
Mustafa Rezaei, head of the Iran-Afghanistan railway corridor, said the launch of the service marked the beginning of the Herat-Khaf railway's operational expansion for transit and trade.
He said the new route could help reduce the time and cost of transporting goods between the countries involved.
