Afghanistan, Oct. 21 -- EU energy ministers agreed to gradually ban Russian gas imports by 2028, adopting a plan to phase out pipeline and LNG supplies across member states.

The Council of the European Union announced that energy ministers from member states have reached a consensus on phasing out Russian gas imports during a meeting in Luxembourg.

In a statement on Monday, the Council said the ministers agreed on a common position ahead of negotiations with the European Parliament on a draft regulation to reduce reliance on Russian natural gas.

The proposed regulation would introduce a legally binding phase-out of pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia, with a complete ban set to take effect on January 1, 2028.
