Afghanistan, May 24 -- An armed man was killed after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening, triggering a shootout with United States Secret Service officers, according to US authorities.
The Secret Service said the suspect approached a security checkpoint near the White House, pulled a weapon from his bag and fired toward security personnel before officers responded with gunfire. The suspect later died in hospital, while one civilian was also injured during the incident.
Officials said no security personnel were harmed. Authorities described the suspect as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been issued a stay-away order from the area.
