Afghanistan, July 8 -- Defending champions Argentina produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals and extend Lionel Messi's final tournament.
Egypt made a dream start, taking the lead through Yasser Ibrahim before Mostafa Zico doubled the advantage to leave Argentina on the brink of a shock elimination. Messi then missed the chance to reduce the deficit after his penalty was saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier.
Egypt appeared to have scored a third goal before halftime, but the effort was disallowed after the referee ruled a foul on Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez during the build-up.
