Afghanistan, Sept. 22 -- Afghanistan has asked Japan to restart a $24 million Kabul water project halted since 2020, as experts warn seven million residents face worsening shortages.

Taliban authorities have requested Japan to resume a $24 million drinking water project in Kabul that has been suspended since late 2020.

The appeal was made during a meeting between Economy Minister Mohammad Hanif and Mai Kyo Izawa, Japan's deputy ambassador in Kabul, who discussed the importance of restarting work.

The project, launched by Japan in December 2020, aimed to expand access to safe water in the Afghanistan capital, but progress halted over the past four years.
