Afghanistan, May 17 -- Russia received 40 asylum applications from Afghan citizens during the first three months of 2026, marking a decline from the same period last year, according to Russian state media reports.

TASS reported on Sunday, May 17 that total asylum applications submitted in Russia during the first quarter reached 1,329 cases, based on data compiled from Russian interior ministry agencies.

The figures showed that citizens of Ukraine filed the highest number of requests with 712 applications, followed by Syria with 232 and Iran with 52 applications.

Afghanistan ranked fourth with 40 applications, ahead of Uzbekistan, whose citizens submitted 25 asylum requests during the same period.
