Today, a fruit grower can receive payment from a buyer thousands of kilometres away, a tourist can pay a local artisan with a QR scan, and a small roadside vendor can participate in the digital economy without owning a card machine. The force behind this remarkable transformation is the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has completed ten years of redefining how India pays, transacts and increasingly participates in the formal economy.
