KUPWARA, Aug. 7 -- A 25-year-old shepherd was killed after being struck by lightning in the Gugerdoor area of Keran in north Kashmir's Kupwara district during the intervening night, officials said on Thursday.

The deceased, a resident of Sangdan Patti in Warsun, was grazing and camping with his flock in a high-altitude pasture when the lightning struck, officials said.

The body was recovered from the spot and shifted to Police Station Keran, where legal formalities were being completed.

Police have initiated proceedings in the matter, officials added.
